In Watson's (1985) second book, she describes the transpersonal caring experience. This is a special relationship in which the nurse enters into the lived experience of another person, and that person enters into the nurse's experience. Transpersonal caring relationship is a union with another, and contains a high regard for the whole person and their being in the world. In a nursing transpersonal experience, the involvement of the nurse is directed toward the other's self. The nurse affirms the subjective significance of the other person, assesses and realizes the other's condition of being-in-the-world, and feels a union with the other, causing the other to be able to have a release of some disharmony of the mind, body, and soul.

So Watson's theory is phenomenological and metaphysical. She does not discount "hard science," but she clearly wants her own work to be more intuitive, culturally defined, and relational. Watson calls for a new lens for nursing that would help us appreciate some of its beauty, art, and humanity as well as its science. She calls her work "human science," which attempts to study the person as a whole. Watson (1990) wrote that nursing is in a dramatic transition and is already in the process of being redesigned.
