This argument parallels the one for anthropology as cultural critique. Some anthropologists view their work as a tool for making critical comparisons among different ways of life. Through the ethnographic practices of description and interpretation, members of different "interpretive communities" (Fish 1980) engage in self-reflection and self-criticism while potentially reconstructing the boundaries of community in order to make them more inclusive, more open to change, more receptive to difference and diversity.
